The project in detail
From challenge to outcome

01
The challenge
Building next to a Major Trauma Centre
The Dartmoor Building was delivered on the live Derriford Hospital site, a Major Trauma Centre serving Devon and Cornwall. Construction sat close to sensitive clinical departments and critical access routes, so patient safety, emergency access and uninterrupted clinical operations had to be protected throughout a compressed programme.

02
Our approach
Structured governance, controlled logistics
We put a proactive, structured approach in place to protect live hospital operations. Weekly progress meetings, decision logs and cost reviews kept governance tight, while careful sequencing of deliveries and road closures maintained access to critical departments. Regular workshops kept clinical, estates and operational teams aligned.

03
The impact
Urgent care, fractures and outpatients under one roof
The building hit its target first patient date and now treats around 100 patients a day. Urgent care, fractures and outpatient services are brought together in one modern setting, relieving pressure on existing facilities and supporting the future development of the hospital’s Emergency Care facilities.

04
Sustainability & social value
Low-carbon by design, local by default
Air-source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and biodiversity enhancements support the Trust’s sustainability goals, with the building targeting BREEAM Very Good and EPC A. Social value included local supply chain involvement, student engagement, work with Southwest Women in Construction and dementia-friendly design.
“
The Dartmoor Building sets a new benchmark for healthcare delivery at Derriford Hospital, combining design quality, programme certainty and strong stakeholder coordination in a live hospital environment.
